| Worldwide there are 63 members of the family Ardeidae, which comprises all the Herons, Egrets and Bitterns. Of the Herons, only Grey is a common resident with Purple and Night Herons making annual visits to the UK. Squacco Heron is a rare vagrant and Mangrove Heron (Green Heron) an extremely rare visitor from N America. Little Egret is now well established as one of the newer breeding species in the UK and in 2008 a pair of Cattle Egrets also bred in Somerset; a first for the UK. They were present for all the year in Cornwall as well and a breeding record for 2009 will not be surprising. Great Egret is a rare vagrant. A few pairs of Great Bittern breed in the UK and some overwinter in Cornwall. Little Bittern is rare and American Bittern rarer still. | ||
