The Ducks are a large family of water birds; 113 species Worldwide. They can be subdivided into Perching, Dabbling and Diving Ducks. Only two species of Perching Duck occur in the UK. Mandarin are an introduced species that has formed a feral breeding population. Wood Duck occur as escapes from collections. There are 6 resident, breeding dabbling duck; Mallard, Gadwall, Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Teal, with the rarer Garganey, a migrant breeder. The American Black Duck is a rare vagrant that has interbred with Mallard in Cornwall. American Wigeon and Green-winged Teal are annual vagrants. |
